HOW TO PACK FRAGILE ITEMS?

VALUABLE SHOWPIECES AND HEIRLOOMS

You might be in possession of some expensive vase, ceramic showpieces, or crystal items. These objects require extra care and special handling so that there are no damages.

  • First of all, ensure that all your valuables get a separate box of their own.
  • Place a plastic air cushion or a thick blanket at the base.
  • Wrap the valuable item with newspapers or foam foils and ensure that the item is layered 2 to 3 times with it.
  • Place some clothing material at the sides as well as on top of the item before closing the box.
  • It would be advisable to place plastic air cushions at the sides or at the top of the item.
  • Make sure you write the word fragile’ or brittle’ on all sides of the box so that the packers and movers handle the item with care.

CROCKERIES AND GLASSES

You might have an exquisite set of wine glasses or a set of glass cups that need careful packing. The problem with such items is they are hollow from within and so any sort of jiggling movement can result in their breakage. Instead of placing all the glasses and cups together in a box, it would be advisable to pack each of them separately.

  • Take a cardboard box and place a blanket at the base of the box.
  • Individually wrap the cups or glasses in bubble wraps or foam foils.
  • Make sure you stuff some paper or foam into the hollow of the cups and glasses to make it sturdier.
  • Double wrap the stem of the goblets or wine glasses with newspapers and bubble wraps.
  • Wrap them in a cloth and place them in the box.
  • You can also purchase Styrofoam cup holders that will hold the cups in places without making it jiggle much.

In the case of ceramic or glass plates, wrap them in heavy layers of bubble wrap or newspapers. Place them in the cardboard box in a vertical manner separated by foam or sponge. You can also place the plates horizontally if the width of the box is slightly larger than the size of the diameter of the plates. You can pad the sides with foams and air cushions. Make sure you place sponges, clothes, or towels as separators in between the plates. This way the plates will not move much or clink against each other.

TIPS TO GET THE PACKAGING RIGHT

  • Always make sure that you plaster the edges of the boxes with brown tape. This will ensure that in case of any tears or holes at the edges, the brown tape will take care of it. Also, the boxes will remain firm thanks to the support from the brown tape.
  • Wherever possible, stuff clothes or towels between fragile materials, especially if you are packing some of them together. More than external harm, there are chances that the delicate cups and glasses will crash against each other and break.
  • If you are carrying a valuable painting, then make sure you tape the corners of the frame.
  • Please ensure that you write the word RAGILE’ in bold letters using a marker on all sides of the cardboard boxes. This will warn the movers to handle those specific boxes carefully.
